Even out of Office Joe Arpaio is Causing Reactions

President Donald Trump has pardoned Joe Arpaio, the former Sheriff of Maricopa County.

The beginning of Joe Arpaio’s criminal prosecution was with a civil case pertaining to the illegal detainment of a Mexican citizen who was visiting the State of Arizona legally. The Mexican citizen sued Arpaio.

This event led to a judge ordering the sheriff to cease his enforcement of federal immigration laws. Arpaio disobeyed the judges order and plead ignorance when he claimed he didn’t understand what the judge meant. The judge didn’t buy it and Arpaio was charged with criminal contempt of court.

The legal battles of Arpaio would last for years, but finally culminated in 2017 when he was finally convicted of criminal contempt of court. Soon after his conviction, but prior to his sentencing, President Donald Trump offered him and pardon and now the victims of Arpaio are outraged.

None are more livid than Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, two journalists that could write a book on their encounters with Joe Arpaio.

Michael Lacey shared the thoughts of recently fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. “Donald Trump is a moron,” Lacey said. “His pardon of Joe Arpaio proves it.”

Lacey went on to say the relationship between Arpaio and Trump is a marriage of perfect evil.

Joe Arpaio has a very long list of accused crimes. A year after his election he created what Arpaio himself describes as a concentration camp. The facility lasted longer than Arpaio’s career as sheriff – it was shut down in 2017.

Joe Arpaio’s hatred for Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin stems from his hatred for a paper they co-owned. The Phoenix New Times was banned from press conferences, treated unfairly when they asked for county records and were threatened with arrest.

The newspaper had been reporting on the wrong-doings of Arpaio for years, when the paper released incriminating information pertaining to asset hiding, Arpaio attacked.

Their arrest led to a 3.75 million dollar settlement and the creation of Front Page Confidential and The Frontera Fund: a newspaper and a charity respectively.

For Micheal and Lacey what happened with the pardon granted to Sheriff Arpaio was nothing short of a travesty to justice. The duo had always waited eagerly for a day that would see the sheriff punished for his actions.

The sheriff rather than fulfilling the promises that he had run on of addressing the issue of overcrowding in jails, choose to focus on other matters instead.

He developed a less than practical solution that involved tented jails which were meant to hold inmates on a temporary basis before they found a permanent solution to the crisis. These camps were reported to get to 135 degrees during summer, a place where inmates were assaulted continuously by officers as well as the chaining of expectant mothers to their beds as they gave birth.

The reports would futher identify the death of a veteran during a jail riot that left numerously injured as suspicious. The sheriff was always at hand during press conferences to absorb himself or members of his department from any wrongdoing while pointing out the immense responsibility that was placed on their shoulders.

This would have worked the cases not continued to rise, and with every new case, it became harder for there to be a substantive defense for it. The sheriff would eventually face a barrage of lawsuits that focused on racial profiling. The Melendres v. Arpaio’s case was the most prominent and one of the most expensive costing the taxpayer more than 70 million.

The case focused on the sheriff and his department and how they were engaging in systematic racial profiling and harassment of minorities. The case would find him guilty of a long-held belief by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin.

Despite all his wrongdoings the sheriff still had a personal grudge against the two and had in 2007 ordered there arrest in the middle of the night. What the sheriff did not expect was the swift and brutal condemnation of his actions from every corner of the country. The department had no choice but drop all charges and release the two.
